          BIOGRAPHY(Zoilo Galang)

              Zoilo Galang was born in Bacolor, Pampanga on June 27,1895 and his young life was spent in that Bucolic town, famed for its writers and artists. He went to school at the Bacolor Elementary School and then went to Manila to study at the Escuela de Derecho, the country's eminent law school where he graduated in 1919. A self-starter he learned typing and stenography in English and Spanish all by himself. Attracted to the English language, he took special courses at the University of the Philippines in 1925, then went to Columbia University for further studies in Literature. He was one o the first Filipino writer in English. He was also the first to key fruit out an English novel entitled, "A Child o Sorrow."

          SUMMARY(A Child of Sorrow)

            It was summertime in April in the Fertile Valley when Lucio and Camilo had prepared for their give way and went to Merry town. Lucio Soliman, a wise, kind, and poetic man who loves genus Rosa Garcia with his whole heart. Rosa Garcia, a beautiful, pure, and moral woman who had satisfaction with Lucio Soliman. He is alone because he suffered in regret with Oscar Ramirez, an intelligent thus far self-loving man who doesn't say about whatsoever and the one who relies happiness except his Pancho, the governor. Ismael, a long time-regulator in Merry town. Even though he was Rosa's father, he didn't care of his daughter's happiness.  

          Lucio was elected President of the Rising Generation and continued in his field. One day, Lucio received an invitation from Rosa to attend their Garden Day and that was the first time they met.

         Like how a Governor Pancho, Ismael can be so round shoulder however, Oscar Ramirez is an intelligent yet selfish guy that he did not have any batred because he met Rosa Garcia who was beautiful interior and out. After Lucio's meeting with Rosa, again admitting his feelings for her and they've become a partner. Lucio spent so much of his time with Rosa. The two enjoyed so much of their time but there is a rumor that the two are engaged. Months passed by, people heard the news that Rosa will be marry to Oscar Ramirez. Lucio was broken that time.

               Lucio told himself if he failed in love, he'll be successful in something else. That was his determination. While Lucio was trying his best to move on. Rosa is doing the total opposite. She can't forget Lucio. Rosa died because she got sick and she died in the arms of Lucio. The novel ended by seeing Lucio at the grave of Rosa still lamenting and reading a letter.

Biographical Analysis

            Zoilo Galang manifests the conservative kind of romantic relationship. The years that Zoilo spent in living to the town of Bacolor, Pampanga. The lifestyle in which Galang lives his life clarifies in which the novel takes place. His manifestation about romantic relationship was based during the time wherein Filipinos are traditionalist and old-fashioned. Through the help of his parents, he makes himself fond of Spanish culture and his perspective are influence by American culture. Through this, Galang chooses love as the novel's main theme.

History

           A "Child of Sorrow" is a 1921 novel by Zoilo Galang. It is considered as  the first Philippine novel written in English. Critics have suggested that the novel was heavenly influenced  by sentimentalism of the Tagalog prose narratives of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Historical Analysis

           It is indeed a reflection of Zoilo Galang's personal life and his time. It also presents the social and intellectual currents in which Galang composed his novel. The novel gives a complete view of wonder, simplicity, and beauty.

Conclusion

           Based on the novel "A Child of Sorrow", the impact on the people was that love became as important in marriage but the truest form of this novel is that, marriage cannot measure the love that binds between the two people. Since the history of the novel focused on the love as its theme. It is such a very powerful feeling that could not prevented by anything else. Love is a feeling, but it also demands sacrifice. The novel teaches us a lot of things. It teaches us the reality in life that we fall in love even in an unexpected time.
